Sr. Offshore Well Engineer

Offshore

Engineering

## Objectives

As a member of the field development team of the Offshore Directorate, the Well Engineer’s role is governance of the IOC’s process to transform exploration and development objectives into executable well programs, integrate input from subsurface, subsea, completions, and contractors, and monitor real-time drilling operations offshore. The Well Engineer does oversight and monitors safeguarding of well integrity, compliance with HSE and regulatory requirements and continuous improvement of the IOC to deliver deepwater wells safely, efficiently, on budget, and with maximum value to the business.

The Well Engineer is the Engineering backbone of the well delivery process – linking planning with execution and supports the organization in the regulatory and commercial role.

## Reporting line

Reports directly to the Manager Offshore Developments & Projects

## Responsibilities/Key activities

### 1.0 Oversight and Monitoring (Governance) IOC’s:

  • Well Planning & Design Process
  • Development of detailed drilling programs for deepwater wells (exploration, appraisal, and development).
  • Conducting well integrity and risk assessments (kick tolerance, pore pressure, fracture gradient, casing design).
  • Preparation of cost estimates, AFE (Authorization for Expenditure), and time schedules.
  • Selection drilling fluids, well control equipment, and completion designs suited for deepwater conditions.

### Operational Support

  • 24/7 support during offshore drilling operations.
  • Monitor well performance and optimize drilling parameters (ROP, torque, hydraulics).
  • Ensure effective well control measures and response procedures.
  • Troubleshoot technical challenges (stuck pipe, losses, shallow hazards, HPHT, narrow drilling windows).

### HSE & Compliance

  • Enforce strict adherence to safety and environmental standards (API, ISO, NORSOK, OGP guidelines).
  • Risk assessments, hazard identification, and mitigation planning.
  • Support incident investigations and root cause analyses.

### Collaboration

  • Work closely with geoscientists, subsea engineers, completions engineers, and contractors.
  • Interface with regulatory authorities for well permits and compliance.
  • Coordinate with service companies (drilling fluids, cementing, wireline, LWD/MWD, subsea BOP).

### Post-Well Activities

  • End of Well Reports (EOWR) with lessons learned.
  • Analyze performance data for continuous improvement.
  • Recommend technical innovations and cost-saving measures.

### 2.0 Engineering backbone of the well delivery process – linking planning with execution, supporting the organization as regulator and partner

  • As part of a multidisciplinary development team, plays an integral role from a wells perspective in evaluating development strategies for new fields across the Offshore Basin, taking into consideration life of field issues, from drill centers to abandonment requirements.
  • Reviews and advice on conceptual and detailed engineering and well planning activities, including well type analysis, trajectory planning, conductor/casing design, torque and drag, hydraulics, relief well planning.
  • Reviews drilling program, tender packages and contract award.
  • Communicates and interfaces with all relevant internal and external parties to ensure drilling is carried out as per approved plan.
  • Monitors and reports on daily drilling progress.
  • Liaise with subsurface, surface, and pre-development drilling departments, particularly during the handover stages from pre-development to development, including interface between various departments regarding field architecture.
  • Ensures that Offshore Well Engineering Codes and Standards embodied within the organization’s design and execution.
  • Reviews well engineering calculations and analysis when required.
  • Provides supplier and contractor product reviews and evaluations.
  • Understands and gives input to the tendering process and provides support to any tendering committees as they become relevant.
  • Contributes to the review of documents and relevant materials for each offshore project as they progress through all stages/phases of a project development including early notional economics/concepts, FEL0-FEL3, implement, pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up and decommissioning.
  • Input for the risk register and risk Identification/mitigation process.
  • Understands and implement environmental, health and safety aspects in all engineering reviews.
  • Participates and contributes in Design Reviews, Project Workshops, Peer Reviews, HAZOP/HAZIDs as required.
  • Capable to train and develop starting engineers.
  • Leads Field Development Project Teams when requested.
  • Understands and able to review and comment the FDP’s, issued by the IOCs, and able to assess risks involved.
  • Provides guidance to contracted third parties representing the organization.
  • Provides High-Level Conceptual Layouts to serve as basis for cost estimating.
  • Provides Cost Estimates.
  • Keeps informed on latest technologies.
  • Improves Internal Policies & Procedures (FDP Guidelines, Stage-gating, Regulatory, Document Management, Codes & Standards, etc.).
  • Builds and Maintains Industry Relationships with key contractors, suppliers, engineering companies, and oil companies.
